As part of fundraising activities for 2016, the Friends of St. Denys' Church decided to hold a series of 6 short informal car shows at Colmworth Village Hall. In the USA, 'Cars and Coffee' mornings can be found in most towns, but we decided that a slightly more British approach was called for, hence the 'First Sunday Breakfast Club' was created. The formula was simple - lovely cars, nice people, delicious bacon butty, modest cost and a worthy cause. In keeping with the informal nature of the event, we chose not to sell tickets in advance, and therefore it was with some trepidation that we prepared the Village Hall and car park last Sunday. Would anybody come? What were we going to do with all these bacon butties?
Well, we needn't have worried. The first car, a spectacular white Morgan Aero 8, rumbled into the car park right on time. And then they just kept coming for the next 2 hrs - a Fraser Nash, an Ex -Works Sebring Sprite, E - types, Cobras, an Alvis, Morgans, XK150 Jaguar, AC, Aston Martin, Rover, TriKing 3 wheelers, Mercedes, a VW rally car, Hillman Imp, Sunbeam Stilleto, too many to mention them all, but undoubtedly the star of the show - a 1902 Hayes Apperson. Yes, a 114 year old car running beautifully through Colmworth with Andy Wilson at the helm. Then there were the bikes - Douglas, Triumph, Harley Davidson, Buell, Kawasaki, AJS and mopeds from Yamaha and Solex. We wanted variety, well we got it!
Our thanks to Paul, Richard, Emma, Simon, Iain, Trevor, and Dave for marshalling and parking the cars safely. Thanks to Lizzie for being official photographer. The Bacon Butty crew worked tirelessly in the kitchen all morning, and many customers said they were the best bacon butties ever! Our thanks go to Sharon, Felicity, Amy, Kate, Jenny, Judy and Viv.
And so our inaugural 'Breakfast Club' was an unqualified success. We believe about 75 vehicles attended and we sold about 100 breakfasts. E mails have been received congratulating us on a superb friendly event, which is very rewarding. Total takings were about £490, from which we will need to deduct expenses for food and hall rental. All profits will go towards repairs to St Denys' Church.
Our next Breakfast Club is Sunday 1st May. Don't forget it's not just for owners, it's for everybody. Come and join us, buy a breakfast and enjoy the cars! We hope to see you there.
